Patient Focus
Patient Spotlight: “I’m Going to Be Around for You."
After the birth of her first child, Sage Collins, 31, of Vermont was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer—a devastating discovery that came only weeks into new motherhood. Under the care of her UVM Cancer Center team, led by hematologist/oncologist Molly Barry, M.D., Sage navigated intensive treatment with optimism and a fierce commitment to her young family. She remains determined to watch her son grow and to build a future beyond cancer.

Patient Resource: Nutrition for Cancer Patients
In 2025, with input from its community advisory board, UVMCC launched a pragmatic nutrition trial to better support patients during cancer treatment. Led by oncology dietitian Jessica Fischer, RD, the study explores personalized strategies to improve nutrition and overall well-being throughout the cancer journey. Participants receive a ‘Nourish Box’ with a cookbook and ingredients; a comprehensive dietary assessment with tailored recommendations; and an optional newsletter subscription featuring cooking tips and recipes.
Patient Service: Oncology Social Workers
Oncology social workers play a critical role in cancer care: they help patients navigate everything from financial challenges and transportation needs to emotional support and connection with community resources. At UVM Cancer Center, our social work team meets patients where they are, ensuring that practical concerns never stand in the way of treatment or well‑being.

Patient Support: a Special Visit from Rally Cat and the UVM Men's Soccer Team
In honor of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month in September, members of the UVM Men's Soccer Team visited Golisano Children's Hospital to visit children battling cancer. With UVM's mascot Rally Cat in tow, they brought inflatable soccer balls, team posters, and their official NCAA Championship rings, earned after a historic season in 2024.
