Goal One

Inspire and provide research and educational opportunities for current and future trainees and early career faculty, across the career development continuum.

Goal Two

Leverage institutional resources and structures, and provide oversight and coordination of cancer research training and educational programs across the University and Health System.

Goal Three

Coordinate with UVMCC program leaders to support career development of programmatically aligned members and trainees.

Summer Fellows and Mentors

Twenty medical, graduate, and undergraduate summer fellows were awarded $4,000 stipends to deepen their engagement, hone their skills, and drive towards new discoveries under the guidance of a UVM Cancer Center mentor.

Kanayo Ikeh: Juckett Scholar

Kanayo Ikeh was named the 2023 Juckett Summer Student Scholar for his work investigating the role of Translesion Synthesis (TLS) in cancer therapy resistance in the Chatterjee Lab.

UVM Cancer Center and the MaineHealth Cancer Care Network awarded the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant

New grant will support junior faculty.

The American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant provides seed money for newly independent investigators to initiate cancer research projects. Uniquely, this program incorporates pilot award funding and coordination of and assistance with mentoring and career development for junior faculty. It is intended for new investigators within six years of their first academic appointment who do not yet have active, nationally competitive research grants. Members of the UVM Cancer Center and other faculty at the University of Vermont and at MaineHealth Cancer Care Network and MaineHealth Institute for Research who are engaged in cancer relevant research will be eligible to apply in 2024.

Alan Howe, PhD, appointed Associate Director for Cancer Education, Research and Training

As associate director, Dr. Howe oversees cancer-related educational and career development opportunities spanning from high school to undergraduates, graduate and medical students to junior faculty.
