Philanthropy drives impact
Donor support—of all sizes and forms—is a critical part of the UVM Cancer Center’s mission.
Philanthropy Supports Cancer Patient Care
Through creative "DIY" community events and corporate initiatives, local schools, community groups, and businesses are leading the way in helping those around them who are facing their own cancer journeys.
Honoring a Caregiver
Physician researchers at the UVM Cancer Center provide top-notch care, and patients and family members often feel moved to give back in honor of their care. Whether the philanthropy is to support cancer patient care or to advance research, it is a remarkably moving gift when a physician-researcher is recognized through giving. This year there were many survivors and family members who made gifts in memory or loved ones or in honor of their caregiver. Kathy Busier of Hinesburg lost her husband to cancer this year and selflessly gave to the Cancer Patient Supportive Services Fund as a thank you to his care team. Speaking about the reason for her gift, she said, “the doctor’s dedication and love for her patients and their families are endless.”
"We are grateful for the wonderful care and support of her and her team. In addition to providing the best medical care, they became members of our family and for that we are grateful." - Kathy Busier
Philanthropy Advances Research
Physician-researchers at the UVM Cancer Center are top-notch and are challenged to provide the highest level of clinical care, and in many cases, conduct cutting-edge research at the same time. Providing financial support to these clinician-researchers has a transformative impact on what can happen right here at the UVM Cancer Center.
This year, recognizing the impact of evolving research and education on clinical care, health outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients and their families, one couple established a research-focused fund—the Richard Charles and Shirley LaVigne Ahern Family Oncology Fund at the UVM Cancer Center.
“It’s our hope that the Fund will assist in developing tomorrow’s leaders in cancer research and clinical practice, and moving early detection and treatments forward,” Richard said. “We don’t think of ourselves as philanthropists. We know first-hand the effect of cancer on patients and their families, and we believe in helping where we can.”

First Annual Director’s Dinner
