Eric Bergeron of Colchester, Vermont, received life-saving CAR T-Cell therapy at the UVM Cancer Center.
One Year Later, Innovative New Cancer Treatment is Saving Lives
Launched in February 2023, the Cancer Center’s CAR T-Cell therapy program is the only one of its kind in Vermont and northern New York to provide the treatment, which trains a patient’s own T-cells to recognize and attack cancer cells. A year later, many in the first cohort of patients remain cancer-free. Eric Bergeron of Colchester, Vermont, is one of those patients.
Data has shown that if patients are cancer free for three months, around 80% of patients will go four years without relapsing and it could be longer as well. “I hope to be in the 80%," says Eric Bergeron.
Clinical Trial Tests Effectiveness of Online Strength Training in Slowing Muscle Wasting in Lung Cancer Patients
Resistance and strength training can greatly benefit patients suffering from sarcopenia -- the wasting of muscle tissue and function that can follow chemotherapy and chemoradiation. But what if you live in a rural area and are unable to attend in-person fitness classes? A study led by Hibba Rehman, M.D., a physician researcher at UVM’s Larner College of Medicine, investigates whether online fitness classes can be an effective option for preventing sarcopenia among Stage 3 and Stage 4 Lung Cancer Patients.
