Program Impact

Careers in Cancer Day Welcomes 75 High School Students

In 2024, 75 students from five Burlington-area high schools attended the second Careers in Cancer event at the UVM Cancer Center, where they received career advice from UVM Cancer Center leadership, faculty, staff, and trainees; and observed faculty and students working on cancer research in several of the university’s research labs. Students also heard from several speakers, including Vermont Senator Peter Welch.

Greta Joos and Maggie Trout: 2024 Juckett Summer Fellows

The UVM Cancer Center awarded the prestigious Juckett Summer Fellowship to two students for their impactful cancer research and apparent student outcomes: Greta Joos, a rising second year medical student at the Larner College of Medicine whose focus was access to non-FDA approved therapeutics for pediatric oncology patients at the University of Vermont Medical Center; and Maggie Trout, a 2nd year graduate student in the Cellular, Molecular, and Biomedical Sciences program who studied combinatorial drug therapy in diffuse midline glioma.

Jason Stumpff, Ph.D., awarded Dean's Excellence in Research Award for Mentorship

As every researcher knows, mentors are an invaluable part of careers in science. In 2024, Jason Stumpff, Ph.D., Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, received the Dean's Excellence in Research Award for his role as a research mentor. This inaugural event aims to reduce the rural-urban cancer disparity gap by convening diverse experts from across the nation in rural cancer healthcare delivery, and building cross-disciplinary collaborations amongst rural cancer health equity experts.
